How to Design a Performance Pay Program

how_to_thumb

Performance Pay Program design can be distilled to three significant and largely independent design parameters: "who?," "why?," and "what?." Based on Susan Moore Johnson and John Papay’s basic framework on performance pay design, DMC offers a worksheet as a means for school districts to evaluate key design parameters and assess their fit with district context. This concise brief simplifies the design process as well as offers at-a-glance insight into the Performance Pay Programs of peer school districts.

This toolkit was originally published in the Spring 2010 volume of The District Management Journal. For more on performance pay programs, please see our spotlight piece, Pay for Performance Programs: Strategies, Structures, and Funding, as well as our case study on the performance pay program in Houston Independent School District (TX).
